Program Information
The City of Hurst Volunteers in Action Program has been
an integral part of city government operations for almost 25 years.
The volunteer program plays a key role as the City of Hurst grows
and is required to maintain and meet the expanding service needs
of the community. The volunteer work force is a valuable resource
that provides each City department with a viable alternative when
addressing future staffing needs.
The volunteer program has three objectives:
- To provide the City with an alternative to increasing taxes
for the funding of additional personnel requests;
- To limit the effects of additional workloads on the existing
work force;
- To provide citizens of the Hurst community an opportunity to
make valuable contributions toward improved services.
Each year, there are two major events to celebrate and thank the
volunteers for their hard work. The VIA Appreciation Banquet is
held during Volunteer Appreciation Week to thank those who make
this program successful. Volunteers who have accumulated at least
500 hours are given awards, along with those who have completed
hours in 500 increments. The Blue Jacket Ceremony (otherwise known
as the Holiday Coffee) is held each December to honor those volunteers
who have completed 200 total hours in the program. The Hurst City
Council presents each award-winning volunteer with a Blue Jacket
at the ceremony.
Recognition Ceremonies
Volunteers are recognized for the level of service at two annual events. They are as follows:
Annual Recognition Event Full time volunteers and special project volunteers who contribute more than 30 hours during that last 12-month period are invited to the annual recognition event held each spring. Hours are totaled through March.
Holiday Coffee The VIA Holiday Coffee is held each December in honor of all volunteers. Special awards are presented by the City Council to those joining the Blue Jacket Club. To be awarded a blue jacket, volunteers must contribute more than 200 hours either as a full-time volunteer or as a special projects volunteer.
