Welcome
to the City of Hurst Department of Public Works. Our mission is
to provide excellent quality services to the Citizens of Hurst through
our water, wastewater, traffic and drainage systems while maintaining
a safe and efficient working environment. The Public Works Department consists of Engineering, Streets, Drainage and Traffic Control, Water, and Waste Water.
Stage 1 Mandatory Water Conservation
With Texas experiencing the worst drought in more than half a century, the City of Hurst is joining other Tarrant County communities in implementing Stage 1 of the Drought Contingency & Emergency Water Management Plan. Beginning August 29, 2011 and continuing until further notice, residents and businesses cannot irrigate lawns more than twice per week based on the following schedule:
- Monday - No irrigation is allowed
- Tuesday & Friday - Businesses, apartments, parks, medians and other common areas may water
- Wednesday & Saturday - Residential addresses ending in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 may water
- Thursday & Sunday - Residential addresses ending in 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9 may water
- No irrigation may occur between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on any day
Property owners are also required to properly maintain their sprinkler systems and make sure they are not wasting water because sprinkler heads are broken, leaking or spraying in the wrong direction.
Additional Stage 1 restrictions include, no hosing of driveways, sidewalks, patios, etc. The washing of vehicles in driveways may only be done with a handheld bucket or hose equipped with a shutoff nozzle for quick rinses. Foundations may be watered up to two hours on any day using a handheld hose, soaker hose or drip irrigation system placed within 24-inches of the foundation that does not produce a spray of water on the ground.
The cooperation and support of all water customers is critical to preserving our water supply and minimizing future water shortages. Violations could result in citations and fines of up to $2,000.

Storm Drainage Utility
On February 24, 2009, City Council held public hearings to begin creation of a new utility for Storm Drainage. This process began in 1995 and was the result of un-funded federal mandates. The new utility results in a new item on Hurst utility bills: Storm Drainage Fee. The rate for residents is $4 per home water meter. This is equivalent to $1.93 per apartment unit and $1.19 per 1000 impervious square feet for commercial properties. For questions about the new utility, please call 817.788.7004. This is a dedicated number for Storm Drainage Utility inquiries. This new utility will help pay for water quality testing in streams, additional maintenance of waterways, more storm drainage construction projects, more erosion control projects and computer software for tracking more detailed permits and work order management. Remember the "Four D's" to defend yourself against West Nile virus.
DUSK / DAWN are the times of day you should try to stay indoors. This is when infected mosquitoes are most active. DRESS in light-colored long sleeves and pants when you're outside. For extra protection you may want to spray thin clothing with repellent. DEET (N,N-diethyl-M-toluamide) is an ingredient to look for in your insect repellent. Follow label instructions, and always wear repellent when outdoors. DRAIN standing water in your backyard and neighborhood - bird baths, old tires, flowerpots, and clogged rain gutters. These are mosquito breeding sites.
